On a crisp Thursday morning, Miss Carter takes the fourth-grade class on an educational walking tour to the historic city clock tower. The tall stone monument stands proudly in the middle of Town Square. The giant clock face has golden roman numerals and two enormous black bronze hands.
The clock keeper greets the students warmly and explains how the ancient gears work. At exactly ten o'clock, four heavy bronze bells strike in harmony: 'Bong! Bong! Bong!' Miss Carter turns to the class and asks: 'What time is it according to the town bells, Alice?' Alice replies proudly: 'It is ten o'clock sharp, teacher!'
Next, the keeper shows them the pendulum mechanism and explains that at half past ten, the smaller chimes ring two melodic notes. Kevin and Mike sketch the clock face in their field notebooks. Learning to tell time in English surrounded by historical architecture makes the lesson truly unforgettable!
